Galt’s Left Hand

If someone had designed a work regime perfectly suited to maintaining the power of finance capital, it’s hard to see how they could have done a better job. Real, productive workers are relentlessly squeezed and exploited. The remainder are divided between a terrorised stratum of the, universally reviled unemployed and a larger stratum who are basically paid to do nothing, in positions designed to make them identify with the perspectives and sensibilities of the ruling class (managers, administrators, etc) – and particularly its financial avatars – but, at the same time, foster a simmering resentment against anyone whose work has clear and undeniable social value. [On the Phenomenon of Fake Jobs]

Among many reasons why I don’t like fans of John Galt, the most prominent is their conceit that financiers and corporate executives are doing necessary work. They do not do anything necessary. They may be doing something useful, but they are not necessary, because were they to vanish, the world would improve by being less dishonest about the value of such parasites.

The source of the insincerity lies with the use of money to measure value to society. Money is a measure of relative psychological value, not absolute or even transactional value. Value to society is subjective, but not from the point of view of “society”–rather, it is assessed from the point of view of other parasites.

Necessity is also subjective and retrospective, not causative. Causative factors are functional and observable, but in the real world, nothing is axiomatically necessary except existence. So, the salesmanship of the arrogant collector of status points is necessary in order to win him a high salary from a group of insecure, slightly lower-status losers, because if he can’t play off their greed and anxiety, he would be stripped and left to starve in the wilderness. But the “necessity” of paying the parasite is not material; it is imaginary and implicit, and based on the inherent character flaws of his acolytes.

This is why I say to John Galt and every other Alpha jerk, that I welcome their exit from society, and they can take their harem of sluts with them.
